2014 Football Uniforms

The 2014 Georgia Tech football promotional poster.

On May 28, the Georgia Tech marketing department (@GaTechMarketing) tweeted an image of the 2014 Yellow Jacket football promotional poster. While the poster generated excitement for many anticipating the upcoming football season, being a uniform enthusiast it did something additional for me, it gave a glimpse of what I thought the Yellow Jackets will be wearing for their 2014 campaign, the old school uniforms. With Georgia Tech’s tradition of wearing white at home, these will be their full time uniforms this season.

These old school uniforms consist of a white jersey with navy block numbers and three shoulder stripes (navy, gold, navy), gold pants with three vertical stripes (navy, white, navy), and Tech’s usual gold helmet with the GT logo. A transition to these uniforms full time is a move I have been strongly hoping for since these uniforms debuted last fall. While the tweet got my hopes up and caused speculation, it didn’t confirm anything.

The ACC held their annual media day on July 20-21 at which there were two players from each school in his jersey, the Georgia Tech players wore the old school jerseys, further hinting that those will be in use this fall.

On a recent visit to campus, I noticed all the signage for the football team around the school shows the old school uniforms. This includes life-size cardboard cutouts, posters, and pocket schedules. Just like it is unlikely the school would use Justin Thomas in their marketing unless he was going to be the starting quarterback, they wouldn’t use the old school uniforms in every publication if they weren’t going to be the standard uniform this fall.

While all signs pointed to the Yellow Jackets suiting up in their old school uniforms, it had never been explicitly said until Quayshawn Nealy (@Q_nealy54) responded to a fan’s recent tweet asking what the team would be wearing this season, while he did say he was uncertain Nealy replied, “I think the old school one’s [sic].” Although he may be uncertain, no one would have a better guess than one of the faces of the team.

We may not know for sure what uniforms the Yellow Jackets will wear until they take the field against Wofford August 30 at home in Bobby Dodd Stadium, but for fans of the old school uniforms the likelihood of seeing them every Saturday is looking good.

Update: we have learned more and have new thoughts on the matter of uniforms, read about it here.
